Brandon's Autocross and Other Racing Stories

My TA RC10T3 Racing Truck

Welcome to my racing stories web page. It's mostly just geared towards all the Solo 2 racing I've done, since right now that's almost all the race experience I have. As I run in more open track events however, I'll post my reviews of those events as well.

February 23rd 2002: 2002 Quaker State 500 Grand Prix at Chandler Motorsports Park
This is actually the first event that I am doing a write-up on that I didn't even participate in at all as a competitor. Instead, I helped run the event from a timing and scoring standpoint as well as course maintenance and facilities. Fact is, it was actually an R/C car race that Brady organized and I just helped photograph and keep running smoothly. The event had four competitors and four race events to decide the ultimate champion. With 3 HPI entries and 1 Team Associated entry, there would also be a constructor's championship. Who went home with all the glory?

September 2000 - December 2001: The Building of a Track Car
Some time after the June 2000 autocross, I decided that I wanted to build a dedicated track car. Something that I could autocross too, but mainly just something to blast around road courses with both in hotlapping groups and also real wheel to wheel racing. Little did I know just how far in over my head I would wind up and how long it would take to build a car for this.

June 12th, 1999: Buttonwillow Raceway (Buttonwillow, California)
This was it: my first road course event. After spending nearly two months preparing, I finally got the chance to drive flat-out on one of the most challenging road courses in the west.

June 5th, 1999: EFA (Phoenix)
My first autocross with my Kumho V700 race tires turned out to be a great one. Racing at night was also a new experience, but I still managed to once again push the limits and set personal best PAX time.

The 1999 Spring Series Points Standings
Well, this isn't specific to H-Stock, it's just the full points standings for the Spring 99 series. I managed to take first place in HS though, so I'm quite happy. I may be moving to ST2 next season, so we'll see what happens then.

April 11th, 1999: EFA (Phoenix)
The third race of the series was another highly competitive one for HS Open, and once again, I managed to capture first place by less than a second over the next closest car.

March 7th, 1999: EFA (Phoenix)
This was the second race of the spring series, and would be a defining moment in the season. I'd won one race so far, but was it just a lucky fluke? This time I would be going against two veteran drivers in a BFG R1 equipped Saturn, but sometimes raw power with a little finesse is enough to tip the scales.

February 14th, 1999: EFA (Phoenix)
Receiving the mailer about a week before the event, I found out that we would not be using the Honeywell site, as had been previously anticipated. Exponent Failure Analysis was the new location, and it looks like "lots of new" was to be good luck for me at this event, bringing me something new and coveted...

December 20th, 1998: Tucson:
After doing so well on the 6th, I decided to check out the Tucson region and give it a shot down there. It's only about a two hour drive which I figured ought to be worth it for a good event. In short, it wasn't. The racing surface was rather poor, and the track was really set up better for the faster cars which had a more powerful 2nd gear. My car really just couldn't compete....

December 6th 1998: Firebird Skidpad
Just two short weeks after the previous event, we were all back at Firebird for another race. The course is different every time so that it stays interesting, and this day's course was a pretty simple setup which appeared to allow higher speeds. I liked this, because it meant I could get up to a high enough speed to use 2nd gear without bogging down....

November 22nd, 1998: Firebird Skidpad
This was my first actual autocross. There was a practice about a month before this, but since there was no formal instruction there, I didn't really learn how to do anything but make lots of screechy noises and grind gears in my transmission. This race was run on my OEM Firestone tires, which were really a joke by the time I ran this event...
